Parish Update July 24, 2020 - Father Strand's Bulletin Notice
Since Pentecost Sunday, we have been offering the Holy Mass outdoors. Countless parishioners have told me how much they have appreciated being able to attend Mass and receive the Eucharist outdoors because the extra space and fresh air reduced concerns of contracting the coronavirus.
The primary reason we offered Masses outdoors was because of the maximum Church capacity restrictions of the Archdiocese that limited attendance to 25%. We didn’t want to have to turn anyone away.
In May, when we announced outdoor Masses, I justified the decision with the following canon of the Code of Canon Law: “The Eucharistic celebration is to be carried out in a sacred place unless in a particular case necessity requires otherwise” (Can. 932 §1). In canon law, the term “sacred place” specifically refers to a church consecrated by the bishop. What are some situations that would require the Eucharist to be celebrated not in a sacred place (e.g. outdoors)? A Mass offered in a foreign land by a military chaplain. A Mass offered in missionary territory without churches. AND, a Mass offered during Covid-19 when attendance is severely limited.
This week, our parishes received permission increase the maximum capacity to 50%. (Please note that the dispensation from the obligation to attend Sunday mass has been extended through September 7, 2020.). Given this increase, I am confident that we can resume our normal weekend Mass schedule and not have to turn anyone away. Beginning the next weekend, all Saturday evenings and Sunday Masses will be in Church. Please be mindful to take all necessary precautions that have been communicated in recent months.
Finally, I’m very grateful to the set up crews, cantors, and musicians who helped facilitate outdoor Masses every weekend. Thanks for making this possible.
Just a few notes regarding bringing the Mass indoors: Every other pew will be vacant, masks are recommended and the Church will be cleaned/disinfected as the best we can in between Masses. We will diligently do our best to keep the volunteers and staff safe.
